While that’s all very well, it would be a good idea to see what’s happening on the government’s plans for connecting rural India, not by roads but by telephones. As compared to urban areas where around 90 per cent of people have phones, tele-density is just around 15 per cent for rural India.

Govt to invite bids for three UMPPs soon

There are problems associated with land acquisition in all the three states. PFC is the nodal agency for the 4,000 UMPP each project. The RFQ for the Akaltara UMPP in Chhattisgarh is most likely to be the first one to go, he said. The government has so far awarded four UMPPs, three of which have been bagged by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group company Reliance Power in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand. Tata Power is developing one UMPP at Mundra in Gujarat.
